Malcolm's Kanreki Celebration

Kyoto, Japan

November, 11, 2000

What is a "Kanreki". I am told by my Japanese friends that it is a celebration of one's 60th birthday. The clock cycles back to the age of "1" (I become a baby!). Having had the good fortune to make it this far in life, the guest is honored by his/her friends and colleagues with a banquet. The guest, in my case, was presented a gift in the form of a red blazer to wear for the occasion while he was "roasted" and toasted.  We had an international symposium in cellulose held congruently with the Kanreki so that we could invite colleagues from other parts of the world to Kyoto. The honored guests were Dr. Deborah Delmer, US; Dr. Henri Chanzy, Grenoble; Dr. Vincent Chang, US. Dr. Bengt Ranby of Stockholm was invited as the keynote speaker; however, he suddenly passed away only weeks before the Kanrki. We were all saddened by the death of this dear friend and colleague.

Another special event at the Kanreki was the invited guest, Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi, CEO and Founder of Roland. I have been using the Roland KR-1070 Digital Electronic Grand Piano for my music compositions, and had completed my Japan CD. On this evening in November, I made the formal dedication of my CD to Mr. Kakehashi. Enjoy these photos. They have been reduced in size to download rapidly. This entire page takes only 2 mbytes of space! The photos really do not do justice to the magnificent event. I want to express especially my appreciation to Tetsuo Kondo for taking these photos! I am also grateful to Drs. Kuga, Okuda, Itoh, and Kondo for making all of the arrangements to have this one of the highlights of my life. Thank you! Domo Arigato!

PS. When I have a little more time, I will download some *.mp3 files of the music that I played that evening.
